When this trip works

While the southwest monsoon soaks the rest of the island, Trincomalee has flat water and sunshine. From October the northeast monsoon closes it and the south reopens. March and April are the turn, when the coast is coming good but not yet reliable. In May the coast is already excellent and it is the Sigiriya leg inland that carries the heat, which is the one thing to weigh before booking that month.

Coming outside that window? Beach Beach Beach! (south) is the same idea built for the other monsoon.

October — out of season

It is October now, and this route reads out of season this month.

Who this is for

  • Travellers coming in the northern summer who want a beach holiday that actually works
  • Anyone who wants flat, clear water rather than surf

And who it is not

  • Visitors between October and January, when the northeast monsoon shuts this coast completely
  • Surfers: Trincomalee is flat by design. Arugam Bay is the eastern surf answer and it is a different trip

Included

  • Private vehicle and driver-guide throughout
  • Eight nights accommodation
  • Breakfast and dinner daily
  • All entrance fees marked included above

Not included

  • International flights
  • Travel insurance
  • Visa or ETA
  • Pigeon Island
  • Whale watching

Make it yours

This is a starting shape, not a fixed departure. The changes people ask for most:

  • Add Arugam Bay for four nights if someone in the party surfs
  • Skip the Sigiriya leg and stay nine nights on the coast
  • Add Anuradhapura between the coast and the airport for the oldest capital
