When this trip works
February to April is the only window where both halves of this route are at their best at once: the south coast is dry and swimmable, and Yala is far enough into its dry season for the waterholes to be doing the work. December and January are fine on the coast and merely adequate in the park. From May the southwest monsoon closes the coast, and the eastern version of this trip is the honest answer instead.
October — out of season
It is October now, and this route reads out of season this month.

What it costs
One route, three levels of hotel. The itinerary does not change.
Comfort
$7,650
$850 a day · single supplement $2,100
The entry point at this level, and still exclusive use throughout: a four-bedroom villa inside Galle Fort, a private tented camp at Yala and a headland house at Mirissa, each with its own staff.
- Exclusive use of all three properties, with their staff
- A private vehicle and a senior driver-guide for nine days
- All meals, cooked in-house
- Two private game drives with a tracker
- Airport fast-track on arrival and departure
Boutique
$12,600
$1,400 a day · single supplement $3,400
The named houses: a restored Dutch-period mansion on the ramparts, one of the two tented camps that actually sit inside the Yala buffer, and a headland villa with a pool over the water.
- Everything in Comfort
- A private whale-watching charter rather than a shared boat
- A historian in Galle and a naturalist at Yala, both privately engaged
- Market morning and a cooking session with the house cook
- A trip director reachable at any hour for the whole nine days
Luxury
$21,600
$2,400 a day · single supplement $5,900
The best of the dozen: whichever of the fort houses, camps and headland villas is genuinely free on your dates, taken whole, with chefs brought in where the house cook is not the right answer.
- Everything in Boutique
- A second vehicle so the party is never split
- The fort opened to you before the public hour, arranged in advance
- A chef brought to the villa for two dinners
- A fixer travelling with you throughout, not reachable by phone but present
per person, twin share, excluding international flights.
Entrance fees, itemised
Site fees in Sri Lanka are high and rising: Sigiriya alone is thirty-five dollars. Most operators bury them in the exclusions. Here is the whole list, with what we cover and what we do not.

Who this is for
- Travellers who would rather have a house and its staff than a suite in a hotel
- Parties of four to eight who want to be together rather than distributed across a floor
- Anyone who has done Sri Lanka once at a hotel level and wants the version with the doors opened
And who it is not
- Travellers booking inside three months for January to April, when the houses worth having are already taken
- Anyone who wants to see the ancient cities and the hill country as well; that is nine days again and this route does not stretch
- People who would rather put the difference into three more weeks of travelling, which is a completely defensible choice
Included
- Private vehicle and senior driver-guide throughout
- Eight nights accommodation
- Breakfast and dinner daily
- Madu Ganga (day 2)
- Whale watching (day 3)
- Market visit, cookery class and owner-cooked lunch (day 4)
- Yala days as the hotel's programme sets them (days 5 and 6)
- Elephant feeding at Udawalawe (day 7)
- Airport fast-track both ways
Not included
- International flights
- Helicopter charter, which is quoted per sector
- Travel insurance
- Visa or ETA
Make it yours
This is a starting shape, not a fixed departure. The changes people ask for most:
- Charter a helicopter for the Yala sectors, quoted per sector at the time of booking
- Swap the south coast for the east between May and September, which is the same trip on the opposite calendar
- Add three nights in a tea-estate bungalow in the hills, which makes it twelve days
- Take a second camp at Wilpattu instead of the third Galle night if leopards are the point
